The general cargo ship United Ocean caught fire in Mediterranean Sea on 100 nautical miles northeast off Misrata, Libya. The vessel was en route from Misrata to Algeria, but one of the aggregates inflamed after overheating and flames engulfed the engine compartment. The crew succeeded to start the CO2 firefighting system and extinguish the flames shortly after eruption. There were no injured people, but the engine was seriously damaged and the general cargo ship United Ocean remained adrift in Mediterranean Sea off Libya. The crew reported the accident to the Italian Coast guard and requested assistance due to inability to restart the power.
The Italian Navy ship Mimbelli was sent to assist the troubled cargo vessel United Ocean. It was estimated that all the 12 crew members are safe and without injuries. The salvage is not yet contracted and the vessel is drifting on 100 nautical miles off Misrata, Libya, but under monitoring of Frontex and Italian navy vessels.
The general cargo ship United Ocean (IMO: 9071052) has overall length of 101.00 m, moulded beam of 17.00 m and maximum draft of 6.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 4,766 DWT and the gross tonnage is 3,806 GRT. The ship was built in 1994 by ENVC in their shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.
