The car carrier Elbe Highway collided with lock constructions in Brunsbuettel Kiel Canal. The vessel was passing through the canal in northern direction, but due to strong winds in the region collided with the stone lock. The accident happened with slow speed and did not caused visible damages, but local authorities ordered the car carrier Elbe Highway to dock at Brunsbuettel for divers underwater survey and special inspection. During the collision the ship was en route from Bremerhaven, Germany to Malmo, Sweden and will suffer slight delay from time schedule, which will be compensated on the next passage.
During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution. The investigation for the root cause of the collision is under way. The authorities had doubts for breaches of the car carrier below the waterline, which might cause water ingress and put the vessel in danger during the passage of Baltic Sea. After full inspection it was estimated that there were no damages and ship was released to resume the voyage.
The car carrier Elbe Highway (IMO: 9316282) has overall length of 148.00 m, moulded beam of 25.00 m and maximum draft of 7.10 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 7,750 DWT and the gross tonnage is 23,498 GRT. The ship was built in 2005 at Gdynia Shipyard in Poland. The owner and operator is Stamco Shipmanagement.
